How the transfer portal changed high school recruiting — and what to do about it
The transfer portal didn't close the door on high school recruits. It made the door smaller, moved it later, and made the film on the other side of it matter more.
What actually changed
Coaches now wait. Before finalizing a freshman class, a staff wants to see who leaves in the December and April portal windows — and whether a proven college player is available to fill the spot they'd have given a high school recruit. That means three things for a recruit: decisions come later, there are fewer high school scholarships at some programs, and the ones that exist go to players a staff is certain about.
Who loses spots to the portal
Not the best players — the uncertain ones. A staff that was 60% sure about a high school recruit will take an 80%-sure transfer every time. The recruits who get replaced are the ones whose film was thin, whose numbers weren't verified, or whose profile a coach couldn't fully trust.
How to be the certain one
Verified numbers. A coach who has to guess whether your forty is real is a coach who's uncertain. Get measured somewhere he trusts.
Full-game film, not just highlights. Certainty comes from watching a player handle a whole game, including the fourth quarter of a loss.
Current film in January. The portal windows mean coaches are still deciding in the new year. A profile that hasn't been updated since November is a profile that isn't in the conversation.
A relationship that predates the decision. The recruit who has emailed a staff monthly since October is a known quantity by January. The one who sent one email in August is a name on a list.
The upside
Late offers are more common now, not less. Coaches lose transfers they expected to land and need a freshman fast — and they take the one whose film is one click away. Ask any staff how many high school players they signed last year versus transfers; the ratio is your odds at that school. Then make sure you're the easy yes.
